An up and down weekend

I had quite a weekend. I went to Maryland to register for classes for fall. We left at 6 am and got there fine, albeit a little late. But I had to walk quite a ways, so I had an excuse. So, I went to meet my Dean and she asked me all kinds of stuff about why I wanted to be a teacher, why I chose Villa Julie, etc. Then she told me I would have to attend for 3 years, not 2 like I had thought. SHOCK!! In Maryland, education students are required to complete 3 years of student teaching. I knew this, but was hoping some of my previous experience would satisfy a year of it. But she said it wouldn’t, so I would have to be there for 3 years regardless. But I like the school so much that doesn’t bother me. The problem is, adding another year means adding another 27,000 dollars my family wasn’t expecting.

Needless to say, we were all pretty discouraged. We had all been sure Villa Julie was the perfect place for me, and couldn’t believe this was happening. I went to sleep not knowing what the heck to do and feeling like I was right back at square one, where I was when I started looking at colleges more than a year ago.

The next day we went to Baltimore and just had fun. I admit it was hard for me, but I eventually got past it. I started thinking about all the little things Villa Julie has that I never would have thought of, and decided I could absolutely not give up that easily. I felt a lot better after that.

On Sunday we went to Barnes and Noble (again) to meet an author named Ed Spruill. He is a motivational speaker and a teacher. He has severe dyslexia, but was not diagnosed until his Senior year of college. Until that time everyone thought he was just slow and told him he would never succeed in college and should seek a trade. But he didn’t give up and graduated after 10 years. He was so nice and encouraging and told me to keep in touch with him.

So today I am researching ways to pay for school. Please pray that I will be able to find a lot of resources to help me. I will also be researching other schools, in case Villa Julie doesn’t work out. Please pray that God will give me guidance about which schools to pursue.

I’m sorry this is so long; I fear I may have lost all my readers at this point!
